Share the Warmth

Share the Warmth is a 2018 stop-motion short film directed by Tomoyasu Murata, produced under the auspices of the Tomoyasu Murata Company. The work emerged from Murata's long-standing dedication to the tactile, melancholic aesthetics of hand-crafted puppetry, a medium he has used throughout his career to explore themes of memory, loss, and connection. The film serves as a testament to his distinct directorial style, which emphasizes physical texture and slow, deliberate pacing to ground fantastical or emotional narratives in a sense of palpable reality.

The production process for this piece utilized Murata's signature approach of building intricate sets and articulated puppets from scratch, focusing on lighting and material choice to evoke a specific emotional atmosphere. In the broader context of contemporary Japanese stop-motion, Murata's work is often celebrated for its patient, artisanal craftsmanship, which stands in contrast to the increasingly digital landscape of animation. Upon its release, it was well-received within animation festival circuits for its artistic integrity and the poignant, quiet narrative depth that has become the hallmark of Murata’s studio.
