She and Her Cat: Their Standing Points

She and Her Cat: Their Standing Points is a short independent animated work originally created and released by Makoto Shinkai in 1999. Produced entirely by Shinkai on his personal computer, the piece represents an early milestone in digital animation, demonstrating how a singular vision could leverage limited technical resources to produce a deeply emotive narrative. The work follows the life of a young woman from the perspective of her pet cat, utilizing a monochrome aesthetic that focuses on the quiet intimacy of domestic life.

The project was initially distributed by Shinkai via CD-R at events before being picked up for a wider release, eventually leading to its licensing by ADV Films. Critics and audiences praised the film for its atmospheric storytelling and poignant exploration of solitude, establishing many of the thematic motifs that would define Shinkai's later, high-profile career. The design remains notable for its stark, evocative minimalism, which serves to emphasize the emotional connection between the two central characters.
