Kazuna's family has a history of suffering from a disease that creates an uncontrollable vampire-like thirst for blood. Knowing none of this, Kazuna was sent to live with the Eda couple as a child. As the sickness begins to show signs of being present within himself, he comes into contact with his older sister, Chizuna, who has been suffering from it since early childhood. Where it came from
Sheep's Song, or Hitsuji no Uta, was produced by the studio Madhouse and released as an original video animation series in 2003. It adapts the psychological manga series created by Kei Toume, which explores the heavy burden of hereditary vampirism through a melancholic, character-driven lens. The narrative centers on Kazuna Takashiro, a young man who discovers his family's dark ailment and reconnects with his estranged sister, Chizuna, in a story that prioritizes atmospheric tension over traditional horror tropes.
The animation reflects the artistic sensibilities prevalent in early 2000s Seinen anime, emphasizing muted color palettes and deliberate pacing to mirror the source material's somber tone. Madhouse sought to capture the delicate, brush-like quality of Toume's original illustrations, favoring fluid character expressions over high-octane action. Upon its release, the OVA was recognized by enthusiasts for its mature thematic exploration and its faithful, if intentionally slow, translation of the manga's aesthetic to the screen.
