Shin Karate Jigoku-hen

Shin Karate Jigoku-hen was released in 1990 by the studio Deck as an original video animation. It emerged during the late 1980s and early 1990s boom in the Japanese direct-to-video market, a period characterized by experimental animation projects that often pushed the boundaries of violence and exploitation cinema outside the constraints of television broadcast standards.

The production leans heavily into the grindhouse martial arts aesthetic prevalent in the era’s low-budget animation. It was designed to appeal to fans of visceral, combat-focused storytelling, utilizing a raw visual style common to smaller independent studios of the time. Like many niche OVA releases from this period, it is regarded primarily as a curiosity for collectors interested in the darker, more obscure corners of 1990s Japanese animation history.
