Where it came from
Shinkai no Kantai: Submarine 707 was produced in 1997 by Knack Productions as an original video animation adaptation of Satoru Ozawa's classic manga series. The original source material, which debuted in the 1960s, was a foundational work in the submarine adventure genre, known for its technical attention to detail and intense underwater combat scenarios. The 1997 OVA project aimed to revitalize these iconic naval battles for a modern audience, utilizing the medium of animation to capture the scale of the original illustrations that had influenced a generation of Japanese sci-fi enthusiasts.
The production sought to balance the nostalgia of Ozawa's established naval aesthetic with the updated visual standards of 1990s cel animation. Directed and storyboarded to emphasize the tension of claustrophobic, high-stakes submarine warfare, the series focused on the technological rivalry between the titular Submarine 707 and the antagonist forces. While the adaptation was received as a respectful tribute to the source material's legacy, it remains a niche entry in the landscape of 90s animation, primarily appreciated by devotees of the original manga and enthusiasts of historical submarine fiction.
