Shirahata no Shoujo Ryuuko

Shirahata no Shoujo Ryuuko, known in English as Ryuuko the Girl with the White Flag, was produced by Studio Magic Bus and released in 1988. The film is based on a semi-autobiographical novel by Tomiko Higa, documenting her experiences as a seven-year-old girl during the harrowing final days of the Battle of Okinawa in 1945. The production sought to humanize the civilian toll of the conflict through the perspective of a child struggling to survive amid the devastation of her homeland.

The film's aesthetic leans into the somber, illustrative style common to late 1980s Japanese animation aimed at social commentary and historical remembrance. Under the guidance of Studio Magic Bus, the direction focused on a grounded, earnest portrayal of Higa’s memoir, intending to serve as a pacifist message for postwar generations. While the film was not a commercial blockbuster, it is recognized by critics and historians as a significant piece of Okinawan historical media, noted for its commitment to preserving the memory of the civilian experience.
