Shiratori Reiko de Gozaimasu!

Shiratori Reiko de Gozaimasu! was adapted into an original video animation in 1990 by Studio Ajiado, based on the popular manga series by Yumiko Suzuki. The series centers on the eccentric, wealthy, and hopelessly naive Reiko Shiratori, a character who became a cultural touchstone for the bubble era in Japan. The animation sought to capture the slapstick humor and the stark contrast between Reiko’s extravagant lifestyle and her sincere, often misguided attempts at romance, reflecting the broader comedic sensibilities of shojo manga from the late 1980s.

The production leans into a vibrant, high-energy aesthetic that mirrors the excessive consumer culture of its time. Studio Ajiado utilized a style that emphasized character expression and comedic timing to translate Suzuki’s distinct art style into motion. Upon its release, the OVA served as a significant entry in the franchise, which would later be adapted into highly successful live-action television dramas, cementing Reiko Shiratori as an iconic figure in Japanese pop culture.
