Shiroi Zou

Shiroi Zou, known in English as The White Elephant, is a 1977 animated feature produced by the Japanese publisher and educational media company Gakken. Developed during a period when the studio was expanding its footprint into narrative film, the project was intended to serve as a high-quality, family-oriented feature that blended traditional storytelling with the studio's established reputation for educational integrity. It reflects the aesthetic sensibilities of late 1970s Japanese animation, characterized by soft, watercolor-inspired backgrounds and a focus on poignant, morality-driven narratives.

The production utilized a team of skilled animators who leaned into a gentle, illustrative style to evoke the fable-like quality of the source material. By focusing on themes of empathy and the natural world, the film was designed to resonate with younger audiences while maintaining the artistic craftsmanship expected of Gakken productions at the time. While it remains a niche entry in the landscape of 1970s Japanese cinema, it is often cited by enthusiasts for its unique visual atmosphere and its status as a distinct, standalone artistic endeavor within Gakken’s extensive catalogue.
