Synopsis

It's a pretty basic story about a boy practicing the arts of ninjutsu, fighting evil and trying to find his mother.

Young Fujimaru got snatched away from his mother by an eagle and was rescued by a ninja named Sasuke who raised him and taught him ninja techniques.

Later Fujimaru embarks on a quest to find his mother, encounters his arch enemy and learns about a secret book that contains secret ninja arts.

The series is pretty old, but portraits loads of classic ninja techniques, like elemental manipulation (fire & wind), creating illusionary clones and breathing through a reed.

Provenance

Where it came from

Shounen Ninja Kaze no Fujimaru premiered in 1964 as one of the earliest animated television series produced by Toei Animation. Created during the infancy of Japanese television anime, the series emerged at a time when the studio was experimenting with translating manga-style action to the small screen. It occupies a significant place in history as the first ninja-themed anime, setting foundational tropes for the genre that would influence decades of subsequent storytelling.

The series was produced under the direction of Toei's growing animation department, which sought to capitalize on the popularity of adventure-focused narratives. The character designs were crafted to be bold and legible for the limited animation techniques of the era, focusing on fluid action sequences that stood out for 1964 production standards. While it served as a pilot for the studio's broader capabilities, it was warmly received by domestic audiences for its imaginative take on historical folklore and martial arts fantasy.
