Where it came from
Shounen Tokugawa Ieyasu was produced in 1975 as a biographical animated series detailing the early life of the first Tokugawa shogunate. Released during a period when Japanese television was heavily invested in historical drama, the series aimed to dramatize the childhood and formative struggles of Tokugawa Ieyasu, framing his rise to power as a narrative of perseverance for a younger audience.
The production was helmed by Toei Animation, utilizing the studio's established expertise in historical anime storytelling. The design and artistic direction sought to balance historical accuracy with the conventions of 1970s character animation, intending to educate children on samurai-era politics and values while maintaining engagement through episodic storytelling.
