The story revolves around a mature prisoner who was released on good behavior during Japan's Showa Genroku era (1960s to early 1970s). He is called Yotarou by others, a term that means an "anti-hero" or a "dim-witted man." When he returns to society, he starts a new life in rakugo (comic storytelling). Touched by Yakumo's role as the "grim reaper," he asks the master to take him in as an apprentice.

Where it came from
Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu: Yotarou Hourou-hen was released in 2015 as a two-part original video animation series that served as a prologue to the acclaimed television anime adaptation. Produced by Studio DEEN, these episodes were designed to bridge the gap between Haruko Kumota’s original manga and the complex historical drama that defines the series, specifically detailing the release of the protagonist, Yotarou, from prison and his subsequent initiation into the world of traditional Japanese Rakugo.
The project was helmed by director Mamoru Hatakeyama, who sought to capture the deliberate, rhythmic nature of Rakugo performance through methodical pacing and detailed character animation. The OVA was met with significant critical praise for its atmospheric storytelling and its respectful, nuanced portrayal of a fading art form, effectively setting the artistic tone and emotional stakes for the full series that followed in 2016.
