Shouwa Ahozoushi Akanuke Ichiban!

Shouwa Ahozoushi Akanuke Ichiban! was produced by Tokyo Movie Shinsha and aired on TV Asahi beginning in 1985. The series is a comedic period piece set during the Edo period, centered on a country boy named Ichiban who travels to the city. It represents a specific subgenre of 1980s anime that sought to blend historical settings with slapstick humor and irreverent character designs, reflecting the broader trend of experimental, character-driven storytelling common in the mid-80s television landscape.

The character designs for the series were helmed by Rumiko Takahashi, whose distinctively fluid and expressive style was already gaining significant traction in the industry at the time. Her involvement provided the show with a recognizable aesthetic, emphasizing comedic physical antics over strict period accuracy. While the series did not reach the global cultural phenomenon status of some of her other works, it remains a notable example of the creative freedom granted to designers within the mid-80s Japanese broadcast animation system.
