Shuten Doji - The Star Hand Kid

Shuten Doji, released as The Star Hand Kid, is a 1989 anime OVA produced by Danga-Kikaku and adapted for English-language audiences by ADV Films in the late 1990s. The story is based on the manga by Go Nagai, the legendary creator of Mazinger Z and Devilman, known for his penchant for blending Japanese folklore with visceral, often dark, science-fiction and supernatural themes. It follows the titular character, a young man who discovers he is the reincarnation of a powerful oni, as he navigates a conflict between humanity and demonic forces.

The animation reflects the aesthetic sensibilities of late 1980s OVA productions, which were often experimental and aimed at a maturing audience accustomed to grittier storytelling. By the time ADV Films brought the title to North America, it arrived during a period of rapid expansion for the home video market, where collectors sought out Nagai's works for their unique, surreal visual style. While not as commercially ubiquitous as his other franchises, the OVA remains a significant artifact for those documenting the transition of Japanese cult animation into the international market.
