Spring and Chaos

Spring and Chaos, titled Ginga no Kōshinkoku in Japanese, was released in 1996 to commemorate the centenary of the birth of the beloved poet and author Kenji Miyazawa. Produced by Group TAC and directed by Shoji Kawamori, the film is an impressionistic animation that blends the biographical details of Miyazawa’s life with the surreal, whimsical imagery found in his most famous literary works. It serves as a visual meditation on his struggles with grief, his deep connection to the natural world of Iwate Prefecture, and his lifelong search for artistic meaning.

The film is celebrated for its unique aesthetic, which translates Miyazawa's complex, often abstract, writing style into a distinct visual language. Character designs were heavily influenced by the art of Yuko Sato, who utilized a soft, watercolor-inspired palette to evoke the bittersweet tone of the original texts. Upon its release, it was received as a contemplative tribute, praised by critics for its refusal to adhere to traditional narrative structures and for its faithful, heartfelt recreation of the author’s philosophical landscape.
