Where it came from
Squishy! Black Clover is a series of short-form comedy shorts released in 2019, produced by the animation studio DLE. Created to coincide with the popularity of the main Black Clover anime series, these episodes utilize a super-deformed, 'chibi' aesthetic designed to provide a lighthearted, humorous look at the characters' daily lives. By utilizing a simplified art style, the studio leaned into the gag-comedy roots of the franchise, offering a departure from the high-stakes action typically associated with the main series.
The animation was developed by DLE, a studio well-known for its distinct flash-animation style and surreal approach to humor. The series was designed to serve as supplemental content for fans, airing during the broadcast run of the primary show. It was received as a charming diversion, focusing on character-driven sketches that played off the established personalities of Asta, Yuno, and the rest of the Black Clover cast in a format that was quick, accessible, and intended to foster community engagement between main broadcast arcs.
