Squishy Fish Eggs

Squishy Fish Eggs emerged from the Geidai Animation program, a renowned collective based at the Tokyo University of the Arts. Produced as an independent short film, the project was created to showcase the experimental techniques and narrative sensibilities of emerging animation students, reflecting a trend of avant-garde storytelling within the Japanese academic animation scene during the early 21st century.

The film is defined by its tactile, fluid aesthetic, which leans heavily into the surrealist tradition. The creators intended to evoke a sensory experience through the manipulation of textures and organic movement, moving away from traditional cel animation toward a more visceral visual language. Upon its limited release at international festivals, the work was noted by critics for its bold artistic direction and its ability to construct a complex atmosphere without the need for conventional dialogue.
