Strait Jacket

Strait Jacket is a three-episode original video animation series produced by Studio feel. and released in 2007. Set in a steampunk-inspired alternate history where magic is a scientifically recognized but hazardous force, the narrative follows Reishius Orta, a 'Tactical Magic Technician' tasked with containing the horrific mutations that occur when humans misuse magical powers. The series was adapted from the light novel sequence by Ichiro Sakaki, a prolific author known for his contributions to the fantasy and light novel landscape of the early 2000s.

The animation reflects the aesthetic sensibilities of mid-2000s dark fantasy, utilizing a blend of traditional cel-style character designs and early digital integration to emphasize the grim, industrial setting. The production was overseen by director Shinji Ushiro, who aimed to capture the visceral nature of the original light novels' combat sequences. While the series received modest attention upon release, it remains a notable example of the era's interest in darker, gritty supernatural storytelling, characterized by its complex world-building and heavy emphasis on the consequences of forbidden arcane technology.
