Taiyou no Kiba Dougram

Taiyou no Kiba Dougram, often referred to as Fang of the Sun Dougram, premiered in 1981 as a seminal work in the real robot genre. Produced by Sunrise and directed by Ryosuke Takahashi, the series was designed to shift away from the superhero-style robots of the era, grounding its narrative in the political struggle of a colony on the planet Deloyer. The mechanical designs were handled by Kunio Okawara, whose focus on industrial, realistic-looking machinery influenced the aesthetic of the entire genre for years to come.

The series is noted for its slow-burn, realistic approach to war and political intrigue rather than traditional action-oriented storytelling. It was well-received by audiences for its thematic maturity and complex character dynamics. The design of the titular Dougram was particularly iconic, characterized by a utilitarian look that emphasized its role as a mass-produced weapon rather than a singular heroic vessel, helping to solidify the hard science fiction appeal that Sunrise sought to cultivate.
