Dark River, the most mysterious assassin organization in the jianghu, consists of three families, Su, Xie and Mu, and the highest commander of the three families is called the Great Chief. The head of the organization was poisoned and his life was in danger. The three forces of the Dark River learn the news and take advantage of the opportunity to launch a rebellion. Su Muyu, as the leader of the chief's escort group Spider's Shadow, sought out Medicine King Valley's miracle doctor Bai Hehuai to treat the chief, while repelling the assassins of all the families to protect the chief's safety. But at this time, his best friend Su Changhe in Dark River joined the assassination of the great chief on behalf of the Su family.

Where it came from
Tales of Dark River emerged from the Passion Paint Animation studio as an original net animation, marking a distinct effort to blend moody, atmospheric storytelling with the specific visual sensibilities of independent digital production. Developed during a period when online distribution began to allow smaller studios to experiment with niche genres, the project aimed to provide a darker, more contemplative narrative than typical contemporary releases, focusing on somber tone and fluid, character-driven movement.
The production design reflects an intentional departure from mainstream aesthetics, favoring a muted color palette and stark lighting to emphasize the title's thematic weight. By utilizing a deliberate, pacing-focused directorial style, the creators sought to build an immersive experience that prioritized mood over rapid action. Upon its release, it was recognized by critics and enthusiasts within the indie animation scene for its stylistic cohesion and the studio's technical commitment to a consistent, albeit melancholy, visual identity.
