The Tenka Hyakken franchise centers around the "Mitsurugi," maidens who are physical incarnations of ancient swords. They have pledged to live peaceful lives after the era of warfare, but are now returning to battle to fight a new foe that has arisen during an alternate version of the Meiji Era, three hundred years after the Battle of Sekigahara.

Where it came from
Tenka Hyakken: Meiji-kan e Youkoso! is a short-form anime series produced by studio LIDENFILMS, released in 2019 as an extension of the Tenka Hyakken (Heavenly Swords) multimedia franchise. The project originated from a mobile game developed by KADOKAWA and DeNA, which anthropomorphizes legendary Japanese swords into characters known as Tsurugi-musume. The series serves as a lighthearted spin-off focusing on the daily lives and interactions of these characters within the Meiji-kan, providing a slice-of-life counterpoint to the more combat-heavy narratives typically associated with the franchise.
The character designs were adapted from the original game's stable of illustrators, who focused on blending traditional Japanese aesthetic elements with modern anime archetypes to create distinct visual identities for each sword. The series was directed by Daisuke Tsukushi and aimed to deepen audience engagement with the characters through episodic, character-driven humor. It was generally received as a niche production designed primarily for existing fans of the franchise, emphasizing character personality and camaraderie over complex plot progression.
