During the 21st century, humanity attempted to colonize Mars by sending two species which could endure the harsh environment of the planet to terraform it—algae and cockroaches. However, they did not anticipate the species' remarkable ability to adapt. Now in the 26th century, a lethal disease known as the Alien Engine Virus has arrived on Earth, and the cure is suspected to be found only on Mars. The problem is, Mars in the present is overrun by creatures known as "Terraformars," incredibly powerful and intelligent humanoid cockroaches that mutated from those originally sent to the planet.
The Annex I team, consisting of a hundred men and women genetically enhanced with characteristics of powerful organisms from earth, has been sent to Mars on a mission to find the cause of the Alien Engine Virus and to help cure humanity—signalling the start of the crew's fight for survival.

Where it came from
Terra Formars emerged in 2014 as a television adaptation of the popular manga series written by Yu Sasuga and illustrated by Kenichi Tachibana. Produced by LIDENFILMS, the project was intended to capture the intense, gritty atmosphere of the source material, which depicts a harrowing struggle for survival on a terraformed Mars populated by evolved, humanoid cockroaches. The anime sought to translate the manga's high-stakes sci-fi body horror into an animated format during a period when dark, action-oriented seinen titles were gaining significant traction within the global industry.
The character designs and animation direction focused on conveying the biological complexity and physical brutality of the encounters between the genetically modified humans and the Terraformars. While the series was highly anticipated due to the massive success of the original manga, the adaptation faced a mixed reception upon release. Critics and fans frequently cited the series' heavy use of censorship and shifts in tonal pacing compared to the original chapters, though the unique premise and the conceptual ambition of the studio remain noteworthy aspects of its production history.
