Tezuka Osamu ga Kieta?! 20 Seiki Saigo no Kaijiken

Tezuka Osamu ga Kieta?! 20 Seiki Saigo no Kaijiken, or 'Did Osamu Tezuka Disappear?! The Last Mystery of the 20th Century,' was produced by Tezuka Productions in 2000 to commemorate the end of the millennium and honor the legacy of the legendary manga artist. The special serves as a self-referential mystery, blending live-action footage and animation to explore the impact of Tezuka's vast body of work. It is positioned as a sentimental reflection on the cultural landscape of Japan as it transitioned into the new century, heavily featuring cameos and references from Tezuka's most iconic characters.

The production was designed to bridge the gap between Tezuka’s classic hand-drawn aesthetic and the burgeoning digital animation techniques of the era. The creators aimed to capture the whimsy and humanitarian themes that defined Tezuka's original stories, presenting them through a meta-narrative lens that frames his absence as a mystery to be solved. Reception was focused primarily on its nostalgic value, with long-term fans appreciating the affectionate nod to a titan of the medium, though it remains a niche entry compared to his foundational series.
