While the Second World War rages, the teenage Mahito, haunted by his mother’s tragic death, is relocated from Tokyo to the serene rural home of his new stepmother Natsuko, a woman who bears a striking resemblance to the boy’s mother. As he tries to adjust, this strange new world grows even stranger following the appearance of a persistent gray heron, who perplexes and bedevils Mahito, dubbing him the “long-awaited one.”

Where it came from
The Boy and the Heron was released in 2023 as the long-awaited feature film from Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli. Following a period of retirement, Miyazaki returned to production to craft this semi-autobiographical narrative, which serves as a meditative reflection on his own life, his relationship with mentor Isao Takahata, and the legacy of the studio. The project was notably released in Japan without a traditional marketing campaign, relying instead on a single enigmatic poster to generate anticipation.
The film's visual design is characterized by a blend of hand-drawn animation and intricate storytelling that explores themes of grief, creation, and fantasy. The aesthetic continues the hallmark Ghibli style, utilizing lush, hand-painted backgrounds and fluid character movement to ground a surreal narrative in emotional reality. Upon its international release, the film was widely acclaimed by critics for its depth and visual artistry, eventually securing the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.
