Paradigm City is a place without a past. 40 years ago, something happened that wiped the memories of everyone in it. Unfortunately, the people of Paradigm City were very busy before then, making Megadueses (giant robots) and monsters. People who were born after the memory wipe are gaining/recovering memories of the past and using them to build newer threats. With the help of The Big O (a faithful giant robot), his butler Norman and the android Dorothy, Roger Smith keeps Paradigm City safe. As problems mount and more memories surface, Roger's past and Paradigm's future begin to become suspect...

Where it came from
The Big O was produced by Sunrise and first aired in 1999, emerging during a period when Japanese animation was increasingly exploring the aesthetic fusion of retro-futuristic technology and noir sensibilities. Directed by Kazuyoshi Katayama and written by Chiaki J. Konaka, the series was designed to evoke a stylized homage to Western classics like Batman: The Animated Series and 1950s giant robot cinema, set within the amnesiac city of Paradigm. This deliberate stylistic choice sought to ground a high-concept mecha show in the atmospheric tension of a detective thriller.
The character design, helmed by Tatsuya Sato, was crafted to emphasize sharp, angular features and a monochromatic color palette, further solidifying the show's distinct visual identity as a neo-noir. While the series initially garnered a modest domestic reception in Japan, it achieved significant cult status following its international broadcast, where its blend of surrealism and heavy metal heroics resonated with audiences who appreciated its departure from standard contemporary mecha tropes.
