Where it came from
The depths of us was produced by Geidai Animation, the renowned graduate animation program at Tokyo University of the Arts. The project emerged from a pedagogical tradition that prioritizes individual artistic vision and experimental storytelling techniques over commercial imperatives, serving as a showcase for emerging talent within the Japanese independent animation scene.
The film was designed as a conceptual exploration of emotional resonance and atmospheric world-building, common motifs in the studio's output. Its visual identity was crafted by a student director focused on minimalist aesthetics and tactile animation textures, receiving positive critical attention within international film festival circuits for its nuanced character studies and disciplined, deliberate pacing.
