Where it came from
The Detective Is Already Dead, known in Japan as Tantei wa Mō, Shindeiru, began as a light novel series written by Nigojū and illustrated by Umibouzu. Published by Media Factory under their MF Bunko J imprint starting in 2019, the series was adapted into a television anime in 2021 by studio ENGI. The narrative centers on Kimihiko Kimizuka, a young man who served as an assistant to a brilliant, late detective named Siesta, navigating a blend of mystery, supernatural elements, and romantic comedy.
The anime adaptation directed by Manabu Kurihara sought to capture the series' stylized aesthetic and non-linear narrative structure. By utilizing high-contrast visuals and an atmospheric color palette, the studio aimed to emphasize the series' focus on memories and the lingering impact of Siesta’s absence. While the production received attention for its polished character designs and ambitious directorial choices, it sparked varied discourse among fans regarding its adaptation of the source material's complex timeline.
