The story takes place in 19th century Europe and revolves around John Watson. He is scouted by the government to become a secret agent. However, Watson lives in a world where "Frankensteins"—human corpses that are re-purposed with a false soul in order to use them as laborers—are used to improve industrial development.

Where it came from
The Empire of Corpses was produced by Wit Studio as part of a three-film theatrical project adapting the novels of Project Itoh, a celebrated science fiction author who passed away before the series reached fruition. Released in 2015, the film serves as a steampunk reimagining of the 19th century, weaving historical figures like John Watson and Friday into a speculative narrative centered on the industrialization of reanimated human remains.
Directed by Ryoutarou Makihara, the film utilizes a sophisticated blend of traditional hand-drawn animation and 3D CGI to capture its gritty, Victorian-inspired aesthetic. While the adaptation was ambitious in its attempt to translate complex philosophical themes into a cinematic format, it received a varied critical response, with many praising its inventive world-building and visual ambition while debating the pacing and structural departures from the original source material.
