Where it came from
The Finest, a basketball card set released by Topps in 1993, marked a pivotal shift in the trading card industry by introducing the 'refractor' technology. Created as a premium sub-brand during the boom of the 1990s, the set was designed to move away from traditional paper-stock cards toward a more durable, visually striking chromium finish. This technological leap, combined with a tiered checklist system that included scarce inserts, quickly established the set as a benchmark for high-end collecting.
The design of the inaugural 1993 set relied on bold, graphic aesthetics that highlighted player imagery against a metallic, glossy backdrop. Topps aimed to create a sense of exclusivity, as the base cards were printed on a thicker, premium cardstock that stood out in a saturated market. The set was met with immense enthusiasm from collectors, effectively defining the 'shiny' card era that dominated the hobby for the remainder of the decade and influencing the production values of future premium sets across multiple sports.
