The File of Young Kindaichi Returns: Akechi Keibu no Jikenbo

Akechi Keibu no Jikenbo, or The Case Files of Inspector Akechi, was released as a special 2015 television anime production by Toei Animation. It serves as a spin-off to the long-running Kindaichi Case Files franchise, shifting the focus from the titular teenage detective Hajime Kindaichi to the polished, brilliant Inspector Kengo Akechi. The special was created to celebrate the enduring popularity of the series and to delve into the professional backstory of Akechi, who has remained a fan-favorite rival and mentor figure within the broader canon since his introduction in the 1990s.

The animation style follows the visual evolution of the Kindaichi series under Toei's modern production standards, maintaining the intense, mystery-oriented atmosphere characteristic of the original manga illustrated by Fumiya Sato. By centering the narrative on Akechi's investigative methods and his sophisticated demeanor, the special provides a more procedural, mature tone compared to the high school-centric mysteries of the primary series. It was received as a nostalgic and welcome addition by long-term followers of the franchise who appreciated the deeper exploration of Akechi's character development and his early career in the police force.
