THE GIFT

The Gift is a 2016 original net animation (ONA) produced by the acclaimed studio Khara, known primarily for their work on the Rebuild of Evangelion series. This short film was created as part of the Japan Animator Expo, a collaborative project initiated by Studio Khara and Dwango to showcase the creative potential of independent animation studios and emerging directors. The project was designed to foster artistic experimentation, allowing creators to explore unconventional storytelling and visual techniques outside the constraints of traditional long-form anime production.

Directed by the animator and storyboard artist Yasuhiro Irie, the short is noted for its minimalist aesthetic and quiet, thematic depth. Irie sought to craft a narrative that prioritized emotional resonance through subtle visual cues rather than heavy exposition. Upon its release, the piece was received as a contemplative entry in the expo lineup, praised by critics and enthusiasts for its atmospheric direction and the distinct, polished craftsmanship characteristic of Irie's previous works in the industry.
