Where it came from
The Genius Prince's Guide to Raising a Nation Out of Debt, known in Japan as Tensai Ouji no Akaji Kokka Saisei Jutsu, originated as a light novel series written by Toru Toba and illustrated by Fal Maro. The story follows Prince Wein Salema Arbalest, a reluctant ruler of a small, impoverished kingdom who attempts to sell off his country to live a life of leisure, only for his schemes to inadvertently lead to prosperity. The series gained significant traction for its satirical take on governance and the subversion of the typical fantasy hero trope.
The 2022 anime adaptation was produced by Yokohama Animation Lab, directed by Masato Tamagawa, and featured character designs by Ryuunosuke Oji. The production sought to balance the political intrigue of the source material with comedic character dynamics. Upon release, the series was received as a well-paced adaptation that successfully translated the light novel's complex dialogue-heavy scenarios into a visual medium, earning moderate acclaim for its lighthearted approach to statecraft and economics.
