Where it came from
The Girl in the Wind: Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair, known in Japan as Kaze no Naka no Shōjo: Kinpatsu no Jeanie, was produced by Nippon Animation in 1992 as part of the studio's long-running World Masterpiece Theater series. The series was designed to adapt classic Western literature for a Japanese television audience, and this particular installment was inspired by the life of Stephen Foster, the American songwriter who composed the titular 1854 parlor song. The production aimed to weave historical fiction around Foster’s music, focusing on the character of Jeanie as she navigates themes of friendship and the social challenges of 19th-century America.
The character designs were handled by the studio’s seasoned animation team, following the aesthetic standards established by earlier World Masterpiece Theater hits like Anne of Green Gables. The show utilized a soft, watercolor-inspired art style intended to evoke the romanticism of the 1850s, emphasizing pastoral settings and emotional storytelling. While the series was received with moderate interest in Japan as a standard entry in the studio’s catalog, it is noted by animation historians for its unique commitment to musical history, even if it did not achieve the international cultural footprint of its predecessors.
