The Girl in Twilight

The Girl in Twilight, known in Japan as Akanesasu Shoujo, was produced in 2018 by Dandelion Animation Studio and Kikite to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the Animax channel. The series was designed as a multimedia project incorporating a mobile game alongside the television broadcast, intending to explore themes of parallel dimensions and the choices that define one's identity. It represents an early experimentation with the integration of episodic television storytelling and interactive digital gaming platforms, reflecting a period where studios sought to bridge traditional broadcast anime with mobile-first experiences.

The character designs were conceptualized by Masakazu Katsura, a renowned manga artist known for his distinct aesthetic style in titles like Video Girl Ai and DNA². Katsura's involvement brought a specific visual texture to the project, emphasizing expressive character interactions within the surreal, multi-world setting of the narrative. While the series was noted for its ambitious visual goals and the high profile of its creative team, it received mixed critical reception, with many observers noting the disconnect between the complex, multiversal premise and the pacing constraints of the twelve-episode television format.
