The Hare in Inaba

The Hare in Inaba is an animated short film released in 1925, representing a notable early example of Japanese experimental animation. Produced during the formative years of the Taisho era, the film draws directly from the Kojiki, one of Japan's oldest chronicles, to depict the myth of the White Hare of Inaba. It was created at a time when Japanese filmmakers were beginning to synthesize traditional storytelling with the burgeoning global language of animation, seeking to establish a distinct cultural identity in the medium.

The film is historically attributed to the pioneering animator Sanae Yamamoto, often cited as a founding father of Japanese cinema animation. Yamamoto employed the silhouette animation technique, a style influenced by European artists like Lotte Reiniger, which emphasized sharp, high-contrast visuals over traditional cel methods. While intended for a contemporary Japanese audience to showcase the possibilities of local myth-making, the film is now primarily studied by historians for its minimalist aesthetic and its role in the evolution of Japanese technical artistry.
