The Heroic Legend of Arslan

The 2015 television adaptation of The Heroic Legend of Arslan was produced by LIDENFILMS and SANZIGEN, marking a modern revival of Yoshiki Tanaka’s classic high-fantasy novel series. This production sought to introduce the epic tale of the young prince of Pars to a new generation, following decades of previous adaptations in manga and original video animation formats. The series focuses on political intrigue and expansive warfare, aiming to capture the gravitas of the source material while utilizing contemporary digital animation techniques to enhance the large-scale battle sequences.

The character designs for this series were provided by Shingo Ogiso, who drew heavy inspiration from the original illustrations created by Hiromu Arakawa for her own long-running manga adaptation. The production aimed for a balance between traditional fantasy aesthetics and the sharp, expressive character work that defined Arakawa’s vision. Upon its release, the series was well-received for its faithfulness to the core narrative themes of loyalty and leadership, though it was noted for its departure from the distinct visual styles of the earlier 1990s OAV iterations.
