Betrayed from within and overwhelmed by dark sorcery, the valiant armies of Pars are overrun by the warrior-fanatics of Rucitania. Escaping the destruction of his homeland, the heroic Prince Arislan begins to assemble a group of five, extraordinary allies — a priestess, an exiled warrior, a mischievous minstrel, an insightful artist and his attendant — to aid him in his fight against the Rucitanian invaders. Together, they must build an army and defeat 300,000 trained soldiers — including the mysterious Lord Silver Mask — who has also laid claim to the throne of Pars...

Where it came from
The Heroic Legend of Arslan: Age of Heroes was released in 1991 as the first installment in a multi-part original video animation series based on the epic fantasy novel sequence by Yoshiki Tanaka. Produced by J.C.Staff, the project emerged during a period when high-budget, cinematic-style OVAs were gaining significant traction in Japan, allowing for a more ambitious scope than standard television animation of the time allowed.
The character designs for this adaptation were spearheaded by Mamoru Oshii and Sachiko Kamimura, who sought to translate the intricate, grand-scale aesthetic of the source novels into a visually arresting medium. While the series was generally well-received by fans of the dark fantasy genre for its sweeping political intrigue and mature tone, it remains a distinct cultural touchstone for its early-nineties animation style and its faithful, if condensed, representation of Tanaka’s sprawling narrative world.
