Where it came from
The Hills Have Size was released in 2005 as part of an experimental wave of independent animation projects produced by the Milky Animation Label. The OVA was created during a period when the studio sought to explore unconventional narrative structures and stylized visual aesthetics that diverged from mainstream anime trends of the mid-2000s. Its production was aimed at a niche demographic interested in surrealist storytelling and fluid, non-traditional character design, positioning the work as a stylistic outlier within the label's broader catalog.
The creative direction for the project emphasized minimalist animation techniques and high-contrast color palettes intended to evoke a distinct psychological atmosphere. While the studio focused on these specific aesthetic choices to establish an avant-garde identity, the work received a modest reception upon release. Critics often highlighted its departure from conventional pacing and its challenging visual language, ultimately cementing its reputation as a cult curiosity among collectors of early 2000s independent animation.
