Where it came from
The House of Loss was produced by Geidai Animation as a graduate project at the Tokyo University of the Arts. Directed by Jinkyu Jeon, the short film emerged from a program known for fostering unique, experimental perspectives within the medium of stop-motion and hand-drawn animation. It serves as a personal exploration of memory, aging, and the visceral emotional weight of the spaces we inhabit.
The design of the film utilizes an intricate stop-motion aesthetic, characterized by tactile textures and a muted, atmospheric color palette that emphasizes the isolation of its protagonist. By focusing on the sensory details of a decaying house, Jeon crafted a narrative that prioritizes mood and psychological depth over traditional dialogue. Upon its release, the film received significant critical praise on the international festival circuit, being recognized for its technical precision and its poignant, lingering meditation on human mortality.
