Provenance

Where it came from

The Humanoid was released in 1986 as an original video animation (OVA) produced by Toshiba EMI. Coming out of the mid-1980s boom in the Japanese direct-to-video market, the project was part of a wave of experimental science fiction works that sought to capitalize on the rising popularity of high-concept animation. It followed the adventures of a protagonist named Hurricane Polymar, though it was largely an independent effort designed to showcase sophisticated character animation styles that were pushing the boundaries of what home video audiences expected at the time.

The production featured character designs by the acclaimed artist Yoshinori Kaneda, whose kinetic and stylized approach to animation is widely regarded by enthusiasts as a high point of the era. Kaneda was known for his distinct, fluid sense of motion and expressive anatomy, which he applied to the project to elevate its narrative, which centered on complex bio-mechanical themes. While the film is often remembered today as a cult curiosity, it remains a notable example of the creative freedom afforded to animators during the late Showa period of Japanese animation history.
