17-year-old run-away Yui and 8-year-old Hiyori, who lost her family and her voice, have no place to go when they run into Kiwa, a strange old lady. She offers them a place to stay, in a slightly banged-up old house overlooking the sea, a Mayoiga. Despite joining Kiwa on a whim, the two girls find comfort in Mayoiga, a legendary house, said to look after lost travelers, and the warm hospitality of Kiwa. Both girls' damaged hearts begin to heal little by little. Until one day, a variety of strange beings which Kiwa calls “Fushigitto” begin popping up around the house.

Where it came from
The House of the Lost on the Cape was produced by David Production and released in 2021 to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami. The film is an adaptation of Sachiko Kashiwaba’s award-winning novel, which explores themes of grief, community, and the supernatural. Directed by Shinya Kawatsura, the project aimed to provide a comforting, folklore-infused narrative that honored the resilience of those affected by the disaster while grounding the fantastical elements in a realistic coastal setting.
The film's visual design, led by art director Nobuhito Sue, emphasizes the beauty of the Japanese coastline and the distinct, mystical atmosphere of the titular house. The production team focused on creating a warm, hand-drawn aesthetic that felt both nostalgic and inviting. Upon release, the film was well-regarded for its sensitive handling of trauma and its imaginative world-building, earning significant critical acclaim and a nomination for Best Animated Feature at the Japan Academy Film Prize.
