Where it came from
The House Spirit Tatami-chan is a horror-comedy original net animation (ONA) released in 2020 by the studio Zero-G. The series was written, directed, and designed by Rensuke Oshikiri, a mangaka renowned for his distinctive, unsettling art style and dark sense of humor. The production was intended to showcase a unique intersection of traditional Japanese ghost stories and contemporary urban life, focusing on the titular protagonist, a small spirit who struggles with the mundane difficulties of living in modern Tokyo.
Oshikiri’s design philosophy for the show emphasizes a minimalist, hand-drawn aesthetic that prioritizes personality and expression over technical polish, mirroring his original manga work. Upon its release, the series garnered attention for its unconventional tone and its commitment to the creator’s singular vision. While the project is modest in scale, it is frequently cited by fans of indie-adjacent animation as a notable example of creator-led storytelling within the digital streaming space.
