Where it came from
The Journey, a 2021 animated feature film, represents a significant collaborative effort between Japan's Toei Animation and Saudi Arabia's Manga Productions. Conceived as a bridge between Middle Eastern storytelling and the distinct visual language of Japanese anime, the film was developed to modernize historical narratives for a global audience, grounding its epic tone in the rich traditions of the Arabian Peninsula.
Directed by Shizuno Kobun, whose prior work includes high-profile entries in the Detective Conan series, the production sought to balance traditional cel-style aesthetics with modern computer-generated elements. The design process focused on translating the expansive landscapes of ancient deserts into a vibrant, cinematic format, earning recognition for its technical ambition and for establishing a new cross-cultural pipeline in the animation industry.
