Where it came from
The Knight in the Area, known in Japan as Area no Kishi, began as a manga series written by Hiroaki Igano and illustrated by Kaya Tsukiyama before being adapted into a 37-episode anime series by Shin-Ei Animation for TV Asahi in 2012. The narrative centers on Kakeru Aizawa, the younger brother of a rising soccer star, exploring themes of sibling rivalry, trauma, and the pursuit of professional athletics within the high school club system.
The series design reflects the typical aesthetic of early 2010s sports anime, prioritizing dynamic match sequences and character-driven melodrama. Produced during a period where sports manga enjoyed significant cross-media investment in Japan, the show aimed to capture a mainstream audience through its focus on the psychological pressures of elite training. It was received as a straightforward, earnest addition to the soccer genre, appreciated by fans of the sport for its technical terminology and emotional stakes.
