The Legend of Nezha

The Legend of Nezha, produced by CCTV Animation and released in 2003, stands as a landmark of early 21st-century Chinese animation. It was commissioned as a high-budget national project intended to modernize and expand upon the classical mythological figure of Nezha, a protective deity found in texts like the Investiture of the Gods. By blending traditional folklore with a serialized narrative structure, the studio aimed to create a defining cultural touchstone that could compete with the rising influence of international animated programming during that era.

The series is noted for its visual transition toward more dynamic character designs and elaborate background art compared to previous domestic iterations. The creative team focused on balancing Nezha’s historical mischief with a more heroic, empathetic persona suitable for a younger audience. Upon its broadcast, the show was widely received as a successful revitalization of Chinese mythology, noted for its significant influence on the aesthetic standards of later domestic animation studios and its enduring presence in the national television canon.
