The Morose Mononokean

The Morose Mononokean was produced by Studio Signpost and premiered in 2016 as an adaptation of the manga series by Kiri Wazawa. The narrative follows Ashiya, a student who becomes entangled with the supernatural world through his acquaintance with Abeno, a professional exorcist tasked with guiding yokai to the afterlife. The series was developed during a period when supernatural slice-of-life anime were gaining traction, focusing on episodic emotional encounters rather than traditional high-stakes combat.

The character designs and animation style were crafted to balance the lighthearted, often comedic interactions between the leads with the more atmospheric, melancholic aesthetics of the yokai world. Upon its release, the series was well-regarded for its distinctive visual tone and character chemistry, which helped solidify its standing within the genre. It remains noted for its grounded take on folklore, successfully translating the manga’s blend of heartfelt storytelling and humor to the television format.
