Where it came from
The Night When Evil Falls was produced by Cranberry in 2006 as a standalone original video animation, or OVA. Emerging during a period when independent animation studios were increasingly experimenting with darker, atmospheric narratives, the project aimed to fill a niche for short-form horror storytelling that moved away from the more common high-octane action tropes prevalent in the mid-2000s anime market.
The visual direction and character designs were helmed by Cranberry's internal creative team, who focused on a muted color palette and heavy shadow work to emphasize the project's psychological themes. Upon its release, it was received as a stylistic curio by critics, who praised its technical ambition and commitment to mood, though its limited distribution meant it remained a deep-cut title primarily discussed within specialized animation circles.
