A black haired girl is walking around the streets of Kyoto, from the night scene of Pontocho to a second-hand book fair in Shimogamo, then off to a college fair. The main character that has a romantic feeling for her secretly follows her around and looks for the opportunities to run into her in a manner that seems like a coincidence. Unfortunately for him, she is not interested in love yet, so she does not notice his feelings. What awaits these two characters are a series of crazy incidents caused by bizarre individuals, such as a person who introduces himself as Tengu, the god of second-hand books, or a money lender, who collects young men's underwear and lives on a three story barge.

Where it came from
Released in 2017, The Night is Short, Walk on Girl was produced by the animation studio Science SARU as a direct adaptation of Tomihiko Morimi's 2006 novel of the same name. The film represents a significant collaboration between director Masaaki Yuasa and screenwriter Makoto Ueda, who had previously worked together on the anime adaptation of Morimi's The Tatami Galaxy. It was created to capture the surreal, kaleidoscopic energy of Kyoto's nightlife through a whimsical lens that explores the interconnected lives of students experiencing a single, sprawling night.
The film's distinct visual aesthetic was heavily influenced by the character designs of Yusuke Nakamura, whose work is characterized by bold lines and a vibrant, graphic sensibility. Yuasa leaned into this by utilizing a fluid, improvisational animation style that mirrored the chaotic yet romantic tone of the source material. Upon its debut, the film was celebrated by critics for its innovative visual storytelling and won the Grand Prize for Feature Animation at the Ottawa International Animation Festival, solidifying Science SARU's reputation as a leader in contemporary independent animation.
