Porfy, his younger sister Mina, and their parents live a humble but happy life in the Grecian countryside. They've just started running a gas station, much to Porphy's joy, and it seems like only good things are in store for their future. However, a huge earthquake changes all that, leaving Porfy without a home or a family -- sans Mina, who seems to have disappeared in the commotion. Now, Porfy is determined to find his sister and be able to live together happily again.

Where it came from
The Orphans of Simitra is a 2008 television anime series produced by Nippon Animation as part of their long-running World Masterpiece Theater legacy. The series adapts the classic 1955 novel by Paul-Jacques Bonzon, which follows the journey of a young Greek boy named Porphyre who loses his family in an earthquake and travels across Europe to find his sister. The production was intended to honor the tradition of European literature adaptations that defined the studio's golden age during the 1970s and 80s.
The animation reflects a shift toward modern digital production techniques while attempting to retain the gentle, pastoral aesthetic associated with the studio’s earlier works. Under the direction of Takayuki Takase, the series was designed to evoke a sense of global empathy and resilience, aiming to capture the emotional gravity of the original literary source. Upon its release, it was recognized as a respectful addition to the studio's portfolio, valued by audiences for its classic storytelling structure and its adherence to the humanitarian themes of the source material.
