The On-hold Music of Terror

The On-hold Music of Terror emerged from the experimental environment of Geidai Animation, a program renowned for fostering unconventional approaches to short-form cinematic storytelling. Produced as a graduate-level endeavor, the work was conceived during a period when Japanese independent animation began exploring the intersection of mundane auditory experiences and existential dread, utilizing the repetitive, synthesized melodies of telephone hold systems as a psychological trigger for the audience.

The film’s design reflects a minimalist aesthetic, favoring stark, recursive visuals that mirror the cyclical nature of its titular soundscape. By stripping away traditional narrative structures in favor of sensory discomfort, the creators sought to transform a universally disliked experience into an avant-garde exploration of patience and anxiety. Upon its release, it was noted primarily within international animation festivals for its technical precision and its ability to weaponize an mundane acoustic trope through synchronized, jarring visual rhythms.
