Where it came from
The Prince of Tennis II, also known as The New Prince of Tennis, premiered in 2012 as a direct sequel to the iconic sports manga and anime series by Takeshi Konomi. Produced by Production I.G and M.S.C, the series continues the story of Ryoma Echizen as he enters the U-17 national training camp. The production sought to elevate the stakes of the franchise, shifting the focus from high school inter-school tournaments to an elite, cutthroat environment that pushed the characters’ athletic abilities to increasingly superhuman heights.
The design of the series maintains the stylized character aesthetics popularized by the original run, while benefiting from the refined animation standards of the early 2010s. Under the direction of Hideyo Yamamoto, the series aimed to balance intense match choreography with the melodramatic character dynamics fans expected from the franchise. Upon release, it was received as a nostalgic yet fresh continuation, successfully sustaining the long-running series' massive commercial footprint within the sports anime genre.
